History on Tablecloths

We thought it would be fun to research the history of tablecloths! See our findings below, along with some fo our favourite Ardmore Design Tablecloths.

Tablecloths have a long and rich history that dates back to ancient times. The use of tablecloths can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where they were primarily made of linen and used as a symbol of power and luxury. The Egyptians believed that the tablecloths would protect the table from evil spirits and keep the dining area clean.

In ancient Greece and Rome, tablecloths were also associated with status and used to display wealth and elegance. They were often made of fine fabrics and decorated with elaborate patterns. It was common for wealthy households to have separate tablecloths for different occasions and meals.

During the Middle Ages, tablecloths became more widespread across Europe. They were made of various fabrics, including linen and wool. Tablecloths during this period were usually simple and practical, with minimal decoration.

The Renaissance period marked a shift towards more ornate tablecloths. Fine fabrics such as silk and velvet were used, and intricate patterns and embroidery became popular. Tablecloths were considered important elements of grand feasts and banquets, where they would be adorned with luxurious tableware.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, tablecloths became more accessible to the middle class with the advancement of textile production. The Industrial Revolution brought about an abundance of textiles, making tablecloths more affordable and varied in design. Lace tablecloths also became fashionable during this time.

The 20th century saw tablecloths becoming more functional and practical, with design trends evolving to suit changing lifestyles. Modern tablecloths are available in a wide range of fabrics, patterns, and colors to suit different tastes and occasions. They are now commonly used for both everyday meals and special events.

Today, tablecloths continue to be an essential item in many households, used to protect dining tables, add a decorative touch, and create an inviting atmosphere during meals and gatherings. They come in various sizes, materials, and designs, allowing individuals to personalize their dining experience according to their preferences and style.

Why use a coaster?

Coasters are great as decoratives, but the real purpose is way more than just being a decorative piece. They protect the surface of a table or any other surface where the drink is placed.

Beverage coasters are necessary when you place your hot or cold drink on that beautiful furniture. The condensation from the drink can stain and ruin your table.

Shop our beautiful Ardmore Coasters, they make beautiful ADVENT and CHRISTMAS gift
